Both an employee's Social Security Number (SSN) and name must be correct on a W-2 for the Social Security Administration (SSA) to find a Social Security earnings record and verify it's the correct one before posting the worker's wages to the record. W-2 identifying information is so important, SSA will verify payroll record names and SSNs free of charge for employers. Verification can be requested on any worker for whom a W-2 will be prepared - a current employee, former employee, or new employee after a commitment to hire has been made. (SSA will not verify SSNs of Form 1099 payees.)
