| Claims Representative A claims representative assists the public in person or by telephone in establishing entitlement to Social Security benefits. Your contacts will allow you to obtain, clarify and verify information to analyze claims and make decisions regarding entitlement to benefits. You will work in one of the 160 field offices spread throughout our region. The claims authorizer position is very similar to the claims representative position. The work involves some telephone contact with the public to make decisions regarding entitlement to benefits. You will work in one of our six Program Service Centers (PSCs) located throughout the country. The PSC in this region is in Richmond, California about 20 miles from San Francisco. Depending upon your qualifications, you may enter this position at the GS-5 or GS-7 grade level. With good performance, you will be promoted to subsequent grade levels until you reach the highest grade in this position, GS-11. Link to General Schedule salaries and wages. A service representative provides assistance to the public. You will answer a wide variety of questions about Social Security programs, interview people seeking benefits, investigate their situations, and resolve problems. You will work in one of the 160 field offices spread throughout our region. Telephone service representatives are located at a number of teleservice centers across the country and work with the public by telephone. You will answer questions regarding eligibility for benefits and SSA's programs. Bilingual ability is highly desirable for teleservice representatives.

Benefit authorizers are responsible for updating beneficiary records, making sure payment is made to the beneficiary, and preparing correspondence to the beneficiaries regarding their benefits. Most changes made in a case after the original determination are made by benefit authorizers. You will have contact with the public by telephone. Opportunity exists to represent SSA in litigation before the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals, federal district courts, the Merit Systems Protection Board, and the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission. of Hearings and Appeals (OHA) Medical Consultants are psychiatric and physical medicine professionals who review and interpret medical and other evidence submitted by physicians and other sources to assist in determining an applicant’s eligibility for disability benefits. Applicants
for disability include both adults and children. Work is performed under
general direction and supervision in California Department of Social
Services Disability Determination Service Division Branch Offices, and
on the job training is provided. Offices are located in Fresno, Los Angeles, Oakland, Roseville, Sacramento and San Diego. |
