Social Security offers very competitive starting salaries and promotional opportunities. The Federal Government classifies positions on a General Schedule (GS); positions are classified from a GS 1 to a GS 15. For instance, the Social Security Administration Service Representative position starts at a GS 5 and offers the opportunity to go to a GS 8. This means that the starting salary would be $26,195, and with good performance it could go up to $35,933 in two years. Salary is adjusted geographically and in most areas the salary would be higher. Each GS level has ten steps; these steps represent regular raises based on acceptable performance.

You can get more information on general schedule salaries at the Office of Personnel Management Salaries and Wages web page.

We have an extensive and fully-paid training program, and offer numerous career advancement opportunities. The employee benefit package includes a variety of health and life insurance plans. We also have a very competitive retirement program which includes a ten percent tax deferred investment component and up to five percent in employer-contributed matching funds. We give cash awards for adopted suggestions from employees and exemplary work performance. We offer child-care and elder-care in some locations and referrals everywhere. Many employees take advantage of our compressed and flexible work schedules. New employees are entitled to two weeks of sick leave and two weeks of vacation a year. After five years of employment, the vacation time increases to three weeks a year.
