You can work while you receive Social Security benefits. If you do, it could mean a higher benefit for you. That can be important to you later in life. It also could increase the future benefit amounts your family and/or survivors may receive.

  • If you are under full retirement age for the whole year, we will deduct $1 in benefits for each $2 you earn above the annual limit. For 2012, the limit is $14,640.

  • In the year you reach full retirement age, we will deduct $1 in benefits for each $3 you earn above a different limit, but only in the months before you reach full retirement age. For 2012, the limit is $38,880.

Starting with the month you reach full retirement age, you may receive your benefits with no limit on your earnings.
