Positions:
Claims Representative
-
Talks to individuals who apply for benefits face-to-face and/or by telephone.

Understands, applies and explains large volumes of technical material.

Evaluates information/evidence to ensure regulatory benefit entitlements.

Service Representative

Helps customers understand application processes.

Teleservice Representative

Furnishes
information and provides assistance to the public by answering a wide variety
of of questions through calls received over the National 800 number.
(Approximately 90% of a TSR’s time will be spent answering 800 number calls.)

Speaks
with callers about their rights under the Social Security law.

Serves others while being flexible, tactful, sensitive and compassionate.

Gathers facts and evidence to establish
eligibility for benefits.

Explains complex procedures,
regulations, laws or rules to callers.

Resolves benefit, eligibility and
payment problems.

Furnishes and explains application
forms and instructions.

Identifies assistance available from
social service agencies and makes referrals.

Interviews with callers from varied
backgrounds and with various personalities.

Researches, interprets and applies a
variety of complex instructions, guidelines and procedures to a variety of
issues.

Uses
state-of-the-art computer technology to access and update Agency information.
Claims Authorizer, Benefit Authorizer, Disability and
Quality Review Specialist, Program Analyst, Vocational Consultant

Reviews, analyzes, processes and resolves complex case discrepancies.

Examines medical/legal documents and renders payment/eligibility decisions.

Updates records, prepares correspondence, and ensures payment accuracy.

Claims Representative, Claims Authorizer,
Benefit Authorizer Entry Salary:
GS-5=$25,623 or GS-7=$31,740 or GS-9=$38,824.
Yearly promotions follow to the GS-11 level for the Claims Representative
and Claims Authorizer positions ($46,974 to $61,068
range) if job
performance and progress are satisfactory.

GS-5=$25,623. Yearly promotions follow to the GS-8 level (starting at 35,151) if job performance and
progress are satisfactory. -
Teleservice Representatives Entry Salary:
GS-5=$25,623 or GS-7=$31,740. Yearly promotions follow to the GS-8 level (starting
at 35,151) if job performance and
progress are satisfactory.
Your experience as a Teleservice Representative could lead to opportunities
to our Technical Assistant (GS-9), Management Support Specialist (GS-11) and
Operations Supervisor (GS-11) positions.

Program Analysts,
Vocational Consultants Entry Salary: GS-11=$46,974 to $61,068 or GS-12=$56,301 to $73,194, if job performance and progress
are satisfactory. (People already
working for SSA usually fill these positions.)
Locality Pay
& Cost of Living Increases: SSA’s basic salary levels may be supplemented
depending on the cost of living in the area where you work. SSA employees also receive a cost of living increase every year, (if
authorized by Congress) which also increases basic salary levels.
Transit Subsidies: SSA employees who use public transportation to
get to and from work may be eligible to receive a transit subsidy to offset some
of their transportation expenses.
Promotional & Career Development Opportunities:
SSA has over 1300 offices nationwide with numerous staff/ management positions
up to the GS-15 level. ($93,063 to $120,981)
Retirement: The Federal Employees Retirement System provides a 3-tier
benefit including Social Security, a Federal Annuity and an employer matched
tax-deferred thrift plan. A disability and survivor benefit package is included.
Health Coverage: A wide variety of plans are available, including HMOs.
Employees only pay about 40% of premiums.
Eye exams and corrective lens: Many purchases are reimbursed.
Life Insurance: Low cost group coverage is available with a variety of
coverage options. SSA pays a portion of the premiums.
Paid Leave/ Holidays: Vacation time is earned at a rate of 13 days per
year for the first 3 years of employment; 20 days per year for the fourth
through
fifteenth years; and 26 days per year thereafter. We observe 10 national
holidays per year. Sick leave is earned at a rate of 13 days per
year.
Hours of Work: SSA offers flexible work
hours and alternative work schedules, plus time off for personal illness or to
care for ill family members.
